The continuing growth of the Gibraltar Biodiversity Portal

From October 2024 to March 2025, the project, ‘Gibraltar biodiversity gateway’, supported the successful launch of the Gibraltar Biodiversity Portal (GBP). This portal is an open, cloud-based search aid, designed to increase the visibility and accessibility of hard-to-find environmental resources in Gibraltar. It brings together a wide variety of research resources, tools, and other materials about the natural environment of the territory into a ‘one stop shop’, highlighting Gibraltar’s diversity to researchers, policymakers, and the wider public.

Since then, the Parasol Library at the University of Gibraltar and its partners have continued to expand the information held in the GBP. Between April 2025 and February 2026, the team added detailed descriptions of more than 400 environmental resources held by various organisations to the portal. New resources continue to be discovered, as the portal expands sustainably.

The Parasol Library is now looking at the scalability of the GBP, by investigating the ways in which the portal can make further resources more accessible to a wider audience. The team looks forward to building upon the strong foundation of this project to continue to increase the impact of the GBP in the months and years to come.
