New projects receive funding

We're excited to announce that we have now awarded new Darwin Plus projects under Round 13 and Darwin Plus Local projects under Round 5.

Congratulations to the 43 recently awarded Darwin Plus and Darwin Plus Local projects!

Grants have been awarded to 1 Strategic project, 5 Main projects, 6 People & Skills projects, and 31 Local projects working across the UK Overseas Territories. This is the first time projects have been funded under People & Skills, a newly adapted Darwin Plus Fellowships.

Projects range from sustainably managing the unique cloud forest of St Helena to restore biodiversity and improve water security, to transplanting coral fragments onto shipwrecks to grow threatened colonies and enhance marine ecosystem health in Gibraltar, to educating the next generation of conservationists in Montserrat through a training curriculum centred on safeguarding biodiversity, invasive species management, and climate advocacy.

Darwin Plus is one of the UK government’s flagship Biodiversity Challenge Funds. It competitively awards grants to projects that aim to deliver long-term strategic outcomes for the unique biodiversity within the UK Overseas Territories, supporting the communities who live and work in biodiverse areas to build resilience to climate change.

Chair of the Darwin Plus Advisory Group (DPAG), Howard Nelson, shared the following:

“I am so very thrilled to see the list of Round 13 for Darwin Plus and Round 5 of Darwin Plus Local projects that have been selected for support. In our review of this latest round of projects, the DPAG were impressed by the high quality of the applications, the innovation in the approaches being proposed, and the potential for impact of these proposals. We believe that the implementation of these projects will provide critical support that allows for local people to conserve the unique biodiversity of the Territories.”
