Summary
East Caicos is the last, large-scale wilderness area in the British West Indies. Its scale, mosaic of terrestrial and coastal habitats and relative intactness supports rare, threatened, endemic species. Only 18% of the island is protected. The project will create a locally driven participatory resource management plan for East Caicos, develop local livelihood opportunities, and strengthen local capacity for the island’s effective management. This will provide an alternate management model to insensitive development, protecting the
island’s ecological and cultural heritage.
