Summary
The project aspires to better understand Diego Garcia’s options for restoring terrestrial ecosystems where coconut monoculture has taken over. Feasibility sites will trial two methodologies for both assisted and full afforestation. Trial sites will be located in coconut dominated forest with hardwood understorey and a biodiversity focused nursery will be established. Measurable outcomes will be regrowth rates, tree diversity amongst other observations. Additionally, the project aims to connect people with nature by establishing a recreational trail in native woodland.
